This easy homemade plant-based milk, with only four ingredients, can be prepared in less than 5 minutes! It’s the perfect addition to your coffee or tea; you can even use it for sauces or other recipes or drink it on its own as a healthy yet delicious snack.

How to make homemade plant-based milk

  • Nut butter—Any nut butter will work just fine for this recipe—almond, cashew, hazelnut, pistachio, peanut, or walnut.
  • Salt—Salt adds flavour to the plant-based milk. Use only a pinch of salt or leave it entirely to reduce your overall salt intake.
  • Dates –they work as a natural sweetener, and they add healthy macro- and micronutrients to this plant-based milk, such as carbohydrates, fibre, minerals like iron, magnesium, potassium, and vitamins (A, E, B)
5 Servings

Ingredients

  • 500ml water
  • 5 tsp organic nut butter
  • 2-4 Medjool dates
  • Pinch of salt

Equipment

Method

Step 1

Get your blender ready. Put in the water first—this will help the nut butter not stick to the bottom and walls of the blender as quickly. This will guarantee that all the ingredients blend nicely without extra work, like scraping off nut butter from the blender.

Side note:

If you’re looking for a high-speed blender that you can use for all kinds of recipes, I recommend the high-speed blender by KitchenAid. I’ve used the KitchenAid K400* for years, almost daily or more often a day, and I am still more than happy with my investment.

Step 2

Add your nut butter of choice, salt, and Medjool dates. I always wash my dry dates before using them to remove anything that could stick to them. Please remove the pits of the dates before you put them into your blender. For all my recipes, I love to use Medjool Dates. They taste delicious and have a soft texture. Of course, you can use any dates you like.

Step 3

Blend all the ingredients until the mixture has a smooth texture, just like plant-based milk, and no visible chunks of the dates are left inside the blender.

Step 4 (optional)

If you want the drink to be extra smooth, use a kitchen sieve to remove all remaining chunks. You can strain the drink with a cheesecloth for even better smoothness. Now you can enjoy your easy homemade plant-based milk as a delicious addition to your beverages and various dishes, or you can enjoy it purely as a snack in between!

Storage Tips

Your homemade plant-based milk can be stored in the refrigerator for up to five days. To do so, put the drink into an airtight container or bottle and store it in the fridge.

Tip:

Before usage, shake the plant-based milk well since some particles, especially the nut butter and dates fibre, will settle onto the bottom after resting in the fridge.
